Stay Fit during the Summer

School is almost over and summer is just around the corner. But just because school is out for the summer, and all the knowledge that you learned over the year slowly disappears with the summer sun, that doesn’t mean that all of the progress that you have made should also disappear.

Whether you are staying in Statesboro or are going out into the world there are multiple ways to maintain your progress.

Staying in Statesboro:

HHJ-4CRI is up and running during the summer months and so the RAC is always an option. You can utilize the weight room, the basketball, the racquetball courts, and the indoor and outdoor pools.

      Group Fitness Classes – Available during the summer as well. There will be a Group           Fitness Schedule for both A and B term.

      Personal Trainers – Available during the summer months if you want someone to help         you get started or keep you motivated.

      Summer Break Boot Camp – Just like Spring Break Boot Camp and Fall Fit Camp, this       will be offered Monday and Wednesday from 6-7pm in the Group Fitness Studio.

PT-13      Southern Adventures – Campus Cycle will be offered during the summer as well,                helping you stay fit by riding bikes around campus. Or utilize the Southern                          Adventures resources and equipment to go on outdoor adventure trips with your                friends.

      Wellness – Student Health 101 and the Wellness Center will be up and running during        the summer to help students with all aspects of health.

      Intramural Sports – Sand Volleyball, Summer Softball, and Summer Basketball will be         offered during the summer months.

      Tri-Eagle Challenge – A different type of triathlon for those who want to push their               boundaries. There will be a Tri-Eagle Challenge for both A and B term. Students have         the whole term to bike 100 miles using any of the three styles of stationary bikes in the       fitness center, or gain the miles through our Group Fitness Spin Classes. Students also       need to walk/run 26.2 miles using the treadmills or the indoor track. And finally,                   participants need to swim 5,000 yards in the indoor pool, either during open swim or         with a Group Fitness water aerobics class.

Not staying in Statesboro:

Unfortunately leaving Statesboro means you lose access to the RAC, but never fear because there are still other ways of staying in shape.

      Get a local gym membership for the summer months, most gyms will offer a discount         during the summer months.

      Begin a Couch to 5K or Couch to Marathon if you are ambitious, because you can run       anywhere.

Regional Bouldering Competition, No Experience Required

Test your climbing abilities against other university students on Saturday, March 28, with the 7th annual Southern SendFest Bouldering Competition.

Southern SendFest is designed to be a top-score redpoint competition and climbers will have three consecutive hours to achieve their highest score. The score will be a total of the climber’s top five routes.

There will be three divisions to compete in: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

“A beginner should not hesitate to participate because our climbing event caters to all levels,” Savannah Manning, Southern Adventures staff member, said. “We actually have a beginner category and boulder routes set specifically for them, so the competition is much less intimidating than it may seem.”

Registration ends March 26th and the fee is $35.

The fee includes on-site tent camping, restrooms and showers, lunch and snacks, SWAG Bag featuring samples and freebies from sponsors, and awards for the top male and female competitors in each division.

The SWAG bags typically consist of stickers, Chapstick, hand salve, and discount cards, though donations are still coming in from sponsors so the exact contents may vary, Manning said.

Already there are some big name sponsors who have sent donations including Moosejaw, Patagonia, Mountain Khaki, and Smithoptics. Last year $3,000 worth of prizes were donated and so the same is expected for this year, Manning said.

During registration, climbers will be able to choose their preferred heat:

      Heat 1 will be from 9 – 12 p.m.

      Heat 2 will be from 12 – 3 p.m.

      Heat 3 will be from 3 – 6 p.m.

“This is a regional event, so at least half of our participation comes from students outside of GSU,” Manning said. “This allows us to be recognized as a school that promotes climbing, while also providing networking opportunities for participating students.”

Other schools also have to compete for Georgia Southern to be recognized as part of CCS (Collegiate Climbing Series).

After the competition there will be a social at a climber’s house with a rock wall in their backyard.

Participants must be 18 years old or older and enrolled in a southeastern private or public university or college to register.

Climb to New Heights

Ever want to climb an actual mountainside? Well learn the ropes at the RAC’s Climbing Wall and build your skills before showing off outdoors.

The RAC has a 45-foot-high rock wall modeled off an actual rock face. It is manned by shift leads and climbing wall attendants who can give you tips on your form and technique while making sure you are staying safe.

“Climbing is an individual activity that challenges a person both mentally and physically,” Spenser Herkelman, Southern Adventures Program Director, said. “The benefits of climbing can range from improved self confidence to increased strength and body composition.”

In the RAC, equipment is provided for climbers from shoes, to harnesses, to chalk bags that can all be checked out. So there isn’t an excuse not to try it.

The only requirement is that participants wear close toed shoes, but climbing shoes are preferred.

Don’t want to climb up a 45-foot wall? Well try your hand at bouldering.

There is a Bouldering Cave right next to the rock wall that allows people to test their climbing skills in a different setting.

Bouldering is for people who wish to focus more on the difficulty and skill instead of how high they can climb.

Though climbing is an individual activity, the Southern Adventures staff has incorporated a social event for climbers, Bouldering Night Out (BNO).

“Everyone is invited to participate in Bouldering Night Out. It is a non-competitive event with various themes. Patrons do not need to have any prior experience,” Herkelman said.

In the past there has been Ninja, Ghosts and Ghouls, and Neon themed events.

      Fridays: 4-6pm

      Saturdays: 12-3pm

     Sundays: 5-8pm

The Bouldering Cave has the same hours as the RAC.

Get a Job at CRI

Ever think about what it would be like to work for CRI? Well now is your chance to find out!

From February 9 through March 1 the Job Portal on the Student Employment website will list every single job opening within CRI. This includes positions at the RAC, GSU Golf Course and the new Shooting Sports Education Center.

All you have to do is look through the job postings. Once you find one that you might like, submit your application with your cover letter and resume. It’s that easy. And you can apply for more than one position.

If you have questions about employment at CRI, tables will be set up across campus where you can speak directly with current student employees. The times and locations are as follows:

This spring is packed with great programs and events to get you involved, stay in shape, and help you find your #RACLife.

There are three new group fitness classes to check out this semester! We have added a Meditation class, Restorative Yoga, and Interval Training. Never heard of them? You can read the class descriptions here to give you an idea of what to expect before you show up.

Spring Break Boot Camp is back this semester! The boot camp will begin January 21 and is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. No registration required.

Intramurals

Registration has opened for pre-season basketball and will close January 15. Mark your calendars to make sure you and your team is registered to play!

Also, Soccer and Bowling registration opens on the first day of classes. Remember, choosing days to play are first come first serve!

Lastly, be on the lookout to play CRI Open Golf later this spring!

Golf Course

If you haven’t gone to check out the new Georgia Southern Golf Course yet, or even if you have, book your tee time here. It’s only $7 for students to play! You can even sign up for lessons and rent clubs if you’re new to the sport.

Club Sports

The Club Sports Fair is on January 21 at 6 p.m. During the fair, you will have a chance to meet over 30 teams and get more information on how to get involved. Check out our directory to get an idea what’s available before you get to the fair!

Southern Adventures

Campus Cycle had its kick-off last night, and we only have about 15 bikes left, so come on out to rent your bike for the semester. Rental is $30 for the entire semester and includes the bike, a lock, and free parts and maintanence. Don’t miss out on this awesome program. It can help you to save gas money while giving you guaranteed exercise everyday!

SA will also be hosting tons of climbing and skills clinics. Pre registration is required.

Aquatics

There will be some Red Cross certification classes this semester. If you are interested in any of the certification classes register with Member Services on the first floor of the RAC.

If you’re interested in working as a lifeguard, go ahead and sign up for the certification to help better your chances of a job with CRI!

In addition to the Red Cross Certification, aquatics will be hosting Swim2Break, the Polar Bear Plunge, and Dive-In Movie!

Wellness

Put wellness in your Wednesday is kicking off January 29th from 12-2 p.m. with a Just Dance Off event! Come to the Russell Union Stage and get active with Wii Just Dance.

Next month the Wellness program will have their annual Wellness Week. A variety of events are lined up to help you make wellness a daily routine.

A Personal Experience: Rock Climbing Edition

On Friday, September 20, I had the opportunity to climb the rock wall at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC).  Since it was only my second time rock climbing, I didn’t know where to start. Where do I go to get a harness? Do I need any particular shoes? Will they catch me if I fall? I decided to stop worrying, trust the RAC’s staff, and just have fun. The staff working the equipment issue desk beside the rock climbing wall was very helpful with answering all of my questions.

While putting on my harness, I scanned the rock climbing area. I saw students who were, what I would call, experts climbing a short wall with no rope. I also saw students waiting in line to climb the higher wall. Some students were even sitting down and discussing tactics with their friends of what they had planned to do next to get further up the wall. They all seemed excited and passionate about perfecting their technique, which made me even more anxious!

Overall, climbing the wall was much harder than I thought it would be. It takes a lot of stamina, endurance, and strength but it was a great challenge. I look forward to trying again because, as you can see, I was almost at the top!

Remember Eagles, rock climbing is free at the RAC and is a fun way to spend your time before or after working out. Invite friends to make the experience even more challenging by setting individual goals. If this is something that you have never thought of doing, I encourage you to come and try something new. Summertime at the RAC

To all of those who will be staying in Statesboro over the summer, the RAC will be all yours! The Statesboro student population will decrease dramatically within a week after graduation, but that just means there will be more opportunities for the RAC patrons who are still in town. This means having your choice of any of the cardio and weight lifting equipment, plenty of space between people in the sauna and no more searching for the last open parking spot at 7 p.m. on a weeknight!

It’s easy to convince yourself to skip the gym and hang out in the sun by the water, but you don’t need to choose between the two! There are numerous ways to stay active this summer while being outdoors. Sign up for a sea kayaking day trip with the Southern Adventures team! Never been kayaking before? No problem! The SA trip leaders will help you with anything you need and make sure you have a great time on this new adventure!

SA also has various skills clinics that range from teaching you and giving you tips on how to maintain your bike to providing you with the exhilarating experience of zip lining through the beautiful Georgia Southern pine forest! SA offers several activities that will keep your summer in Statesboro exciting, so try something new and don’t miss out!

Need an activity that will challenge you through the summer weeks to improve your physical fitness? Try out the Tri-Eagle Challenge and choose to complete it either during term A or term B. You will be challenged to cycle, walk/run and swim set distances during the term of your choice. Commit yourself and show off the results at the pool and beach!

For the sporty type, we are continuing Intramural Sports throughout the summer just for you! Register for summer basketball or softball in May and begin playing at the end of the month. You can also sign up for the sand volleyball tournament mid-June and play July 9 -11. If you’re not enrolled in more than four summer course hours, don’t worry! Just pay the RAC fees, and you will be eligible to participate in Intramural Sports!
