Club Sport of the Month for the month of January: MMA
1. When was your club established at Georgia Southern and what is a tradition your team has?
The MMA team was founded in the Fall Semester of 2006. We make an effort to have a team camping trip every year.
2. Why do you like playing Club sports at Georgia Southern?
I like being part of the MMA team club for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is that it gives me something to work for, and the club helps me to be on track with school and daily life tasks. Because I have to adhere to a schedule it helps me to keep from procrastinating and being lazy.
3. How often do you practice? What is your typical practice like?
We have practice every week Monday-Thursday from 9-11pm. Mondays and Wednesdays are stand up days and Tuesdays and Thursdays are grappling days. Generally we have a 15-minute warm up, then about 1-1.5 hours of teaching techniques. The remainder of the class is live roll or spar.
Although we don’t compete with other schools, because there are very few MMA teams, we do go and compete in grappling tournaments and MMA matches. Competing is one of the most exciting things I’ve experienced in my life. Because it’s a one-person sport, there is a lot of pressure, but a lot more satisfaction in a fight or grapple.
5. What is your best memory while traveling to your competition last month?
My favorite memory is the companionship with my teammates, both during the competition and outside of it.
We have the Facebook page where we regularly post news and related topics. Other than that, anyone is welcome to come to practice. No experience is necessary; we all had a first day.
