This month’s club sport of month is the Climbing Club. One of the newest clubs in the club sports family, the Climbing Club is a super stoked bunch that will do anything it takes to reach new heights in this extreme sport. I recently sat down with club president, Joe Bakos, who gave me the inside scoop.
What is a tradition your team has?
We’re fairly new to this whole club sports scene, but we are starting to do a semester social where we all get together and give out awards to club members. Plus it gives us all a chance to get a little closer.
What is your favorite thing about playing Club Sports at Georgia Southern?
The friendly but competitive attitude that comes with club sports. Everyone is in it for fun, but they all want to represent their school positively.
How often do you practice? What is your typical practice like?
We have 3 practices a week for about 1-2 hours. They consist of many different climbing related workouts from one-arm traverses to intense core workouts. We even play climbing games sometimes!
How often to you have Competitions?
We have 5 this semester that is actually through the Collegiate Climbing Series. However, many climbing gyms around the greater Atlanta area have competitions monthly. We are going to be hosting our first annual fall climbing competition at Georgia Southern next year!
What is it like to travel around and play different schools?
In one word: Spectacular. I’ve been doing this since 2009, and I love every moment of it. Us team members have made friends at almost every school in the conference and often couch surf with them to save money on travel. Not to mention it is great fun and builds lasting relationships. We often see these same people at local climbing areas when were not in school.
What is your best memory about Club Sports?
Seeing the Climbing Club really kick off this semester! We have so many events planned. We had to increase the number of meetings a month. I can’t wait to see where we will be in a year.
When did you start Climbing?
I started climbing Junior year of high school, 5 years ago, at escalade rock climbing gym.
What if someone is interested in playing your sport? How can they find out more information? Are there tryouts?
The easiest way to find out about our sport is to actually stop by the climbing wall at the RAC, a lot of the Southern Adventures employees know about our club and can give you my information or answer questions you may have. We have a Facebook group that is pretty informative and answers a lot of FAQ’s.
Yes we do have tryouts, however you do not have to try out to be in the club.
When was your club established at Georgia Southern?
Last year, Rick Hood our VP, and I started it off.
Does your team have any achievements the team is especially proud of?
Yes. Georgia Southern was a CCS regional champ 2 years ago before we established this club. So we rep that and want to win again this year.
